The educational programme at Spicer Adventist University is based on the philosophy that a university education is much more than the completion of a certain course of study. Work is a divinely-ordained plan to help the individual to grow properly and develop harmoniously to become an all-round personality. No wonder one wise person coined the sage adage, “Work is worship”
In order to train students in worthy vocational service, to inculcate in them qualities of dignity of labour, cleanliness, cooperation, industry, integrity, leadership, respect for and value of money, self-actualization and self-sufficiency, the university incorporates a work education programme as part of its wholesome academic plan and provides work opportunities in its various service and industrial units to students for their holistic development. The units especially established for this purpose include the bakery, cafeteria, confectionery, estate, gardens, hostels, laboratories, library, maintenance department (carpentry, electrical, janitorial, painting, plumbing), food and metal industries, offices, press, security, sports, and other departments of the university. This also provides opportunities, especially for needy students, to earn while learning, a part, if not the whole, of their expenses. Here students are being educated in socially useful and productive labour.
Further, the minds of students are active, and if not occupied with that which is good and useful, they will inevitably turn to what is bad and harmful, because idleness is sin as it leads one to indulge in various nefarious activities. While it is right and necessary for them to have recreation they should be taught to work, and to have regular hours for physical labour and also for recreation and study. Physical labour that is combined with mental taxation for usefulness is a discipline in practical life, sweetened always by the reflection that it is qualifying and developing the mind and body better to perform the work and thus educating the “head, heart and hand”.
Further, labour is ennobling because it opens vistas of virtues that can be inculcated in a person giving him greater dignity. Also, one must learn the need and value of working together for a common good and a worthy objective. Each person is responsible to the society of which he or she is a part, a responsibility to maintain and make it prosperous by personal contribution. Each must come to realize that the needs of the society are also personal needs, and that he or she must join with the rest in meeting those needs. Work in this setting is a contributory factor to a rich and wholesome life. To provide this training the university maintains a work education programme, and this programme requires a student to put in a minimum of ten hours of work each week. Work attendance is regarded in a fashion similar to class attendance The work done by a student is graded on a semester basis in a system of letter grades and work honour points (WHP). The symbols used and the numerical value in work honour points are identical to those used for courses. If for some unavoidable and legitimate reason a student is unable to fulfil the work requirements of the semester, an incomplete grade of ‘I’ may be given by the Student Work Education Committee upon the recommendation of the work supervisor concerned and the Director of Student Work Education. If an incomplete grade in the work programme is not removed within the following semester, it becomes an F.
Students obtaining an F or W grade in the work in any semester will have to repeat the work and obtain a pass grade. This will have to be in addition to the work requirement of the student for that particular semester. When a student repeats work to improve an F grade it will have to be done in the same department. However, if for some reasons this is not possible, a change of department will have to get the approval of the Registrar. The number of hours a student is to work will be influenced by a number of factors. The minimum a student has to work is five hours a week or 75 hours a semester.
It is essential that a student be prompt and regular in work appointments and if for any unavoidable reason one has to be absent, prior permission should be obtained from the work supervisor through a prescribed form which should be turned in within two working days after the student’s return to duty. The form is to be submitted to the Director of Work Education.
The student’s work is evaluated on the quality of work, initiative, honesty, dependability, resourcefulness, punctuality and regularity.
While a student is given an opportunity to indicate personal preference for type of work, the final decision rests with the Work Education office. Attempts, however, will be made to place a student in the desired department. Generally, first and second year students are expected to work in certain service units of the university such as the bakery, cafeteria, confectionery, estate, janitorial, maintenance, metal works, soya industry, etc. The minimum period of time a student is expected to work in such a department is one semester.
A student who has an unsatisfactory work record over a period of time in spite of repeated counselling, may be required to withdraw from the university. Such a student will not be readmitted unless the university is satisfied that he/she is prepared to improve his attitude toward work. A student who has failed to fulfil the work contract or whose work record is unsatisfactory will not be recommended for the final semester examinations.
Work grade reports are issued from the Work Education Office. The student is advised to obtain this grade report as soon as it is available. Appeals apropos of work grade must be made to the Director of Work Education within four weeks from the date when grades were made available to the student. Final decision for the change of grade rests with the Work Education Committee.
Note: It is the student’s responsibility to record work attendance regularly and to check if the work records are turned in to the Work Education Office monthly and on time.
Request for extra work may be placed with the Director of Work Education Programme. A student who has been permitted to carry a class or work overload must maintain his grade point average of 2.5.
Those depending upon such work should understand the following university policies in regard to student labour:
- The various industries of the university and other work departments operate as much as a business unit. Therefore students are expected to be efficient and businesslike.
- Students are eligible for work only as long as they are registered, and maintain satisfactory citizenship, and labour records.
- The work supervisor’s evaluation of the student’s dependability, respectfulness, helpfulness, implementation of policy, maturity, emotionality, initiative, teachability, skill, efficiency and similar characteristics evidenced by good work determines the rate of pay per hour.
- A student’s request for a change of work, type of work and work department is handled by the Director of Student Work Education, upon consultation with the concerned work supervisor(s).
- As far as possible, students will be placed in the department of their first choice. Should all places in this department have been filled up, then the student is expected to work in another department at the discretion of the Director of Student Work Education, upon consultation with the concerned work supervisor.
- The university takes work as being an integral part of life. Therefore every student is required to work for a minimum of 5 hours per week in order to remain enrolled in the university. Dismissal from the individual’s work programme on account of repeated negligence of his/her work obligations may lead to serious disciplinary action and the student may be asked to withdraw from the university.
- It is especially stipulated that work given to students is not paid for in cash. All earnings are credited to the student’s account.
- A student receiving an F grade in work will have to repeat in the same department. Under special circumstances and with permission of the Registrar, a student may be allowed to repeat in another department. The repeat, however, is in addition to the present workload, which his/her financial plan requires.
